Peter W. Wagner is often called our newspaper industry’s leading idea man.

A highly acclaimed presenter at publishing conventions and conferences, Wagner is best known for his fast paced presentation of fresh, easy-do- advertising and circulation revenue ideas and straight-to-the-point sales training seminars.

The American Journalism Review said that Wagner’s flagship publication, The N’West Iowa REVIEW “is arguably the best weekly newspaper in America.” The New York Times reported The REVIEW “provided coverage as good as any daily newspaper.” In 2005, The National Newspaper Association selected Wagner for the coveted Amos Trophy awarded for “Outstanding Community Journalism Leadership”. This past February the Iowa Newspaper Association presented him with their Master Editor-Publisher award.

Wagner has made his home in Northwest Iowa since 1962, creating the regional publishing firm, Iowa Information, Inc. The company’s N’West Iowa REVIEW, established in 1972, has been named Iowa’s Newspaper of the Year 17 of the last 25 years. The National Newspaper Association has selected The REVIEW America’s Best Medium to Large Circulation Community Weekly 14 times. Published weekly on Saturday, the REVIEW delivers readers 80 or more broadsheet pages of local material with as many as 24 pages in process color.

Iowa Information also publishes the 131-year old Sheldon Mail-Sun, the 47-year old free circulation Golden Shopper, the tri-state travel tabloid, DISCOVER and the bi-monthly OKOBOJI magazine.

In addition to his publishing interests, Wagner operates Creative House Print Media Consultants providing training programs on all aspects of newspaper sales, promotion and management. The family also operates White Wolf Web Offset Printers, a separate corporation specializing in the printing of full color newspapers and circulars. The firm currently prints more than 85 area papers the on two Harris V-25 press lines.

Wagner served nine years on the National Newspaper Association Board of Directors. He is currently President of the National Newspaper Association Foundation and a regular columnist in NNA’s Publisher’s Auxiliary.

A 20 year career in newspaper and magazine publishing paired with an intuitive sense of what clients crave became the keystone of this crack advertising and sales manager; and later group publisher for the Southam Publishing conglomerate.

By the mid nineties John formed JCY associates, a marketing and sales consultancy specializing in SMB’s; and at the millennium turned his attention to education. 
Using his insights on trends, communications and creating “the will to buy”, John delivers seminars combining marketing, advertising and selling to create fully engaged client relationships. 



John helped form the Niagara College - Business Development Centre’s Business Basics programs lecturing entrepreneurs on concept development, client satisfaction, sales, marketing, advertising, communications and entrepreneurship. 

Today finds John writing, speaking, consulting and coaching under the umbrella of creating "the will to buy” while forming fully engaged customer relationships.

His seminars, keynotes and webinars have enjoyed the acclaim of participants from coast to coast; (over 55 presentations in 2008) his background as entrepreneur, publisher and marketing specialist has proven invaluable while delivering “real world experience” with an off the wall and entertaining edge.

A well-respected media lawyer and recipient of the 2009 “Best Lawyers In Canada” award, David has appeared on appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada on four separate occasions and participated in over 170 reported decisions.

His practice includes representing a number of institutional clients including Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canadian National Railways, Meridian Construction Inc., National Bank, Nova Scotia Power and Amica. David appears regularly in the Supreme Courts and Courts of Appeal of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Assistant Professor, Online Journalism
University of King's College School of Journalism

Tim teaches online journalism, instructing students in producing web-based content. He also teaches classes on Internet research. He took his BA in History and Political Studies at Queen's University in 1988 before coming to King’s College to complete the one-year Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1991-92. He returned to King's in 1994, helping to start the first course in online journalism offered by a Canadian University in 1995. He has produced online content since 1995, building on seven years’ previous experience writing for, editing and producing print-based publications. He completed a master of arts in communications and technology from the University of Alberta in 2006. His final research project was an examination of teaching methods for online journalism at Canadian colleges and universities.

He teaches the Online Workshop, a practical course in online journalism. The workshop publishes U-News, a news site serving Halifax's post-secondary community.

Professor of Journalism, Radio
University of King's College School of Journalism

Kim is a Professor and the Director of the School of Journalism at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Canada. She teaches journalism foundations, research methods, broadcast writing and reporting and radio documentary. Her research areas include community media and concentration of media ownership.

Kim trains internationally and is a faculty member in the Konrad Adenauer Asian Centre for Journalism MA journalism program, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines where she teaches courses such as Advanced Reporting, Writing for Broadcast, Radio: A Tool for Democratic Discourse and supervises MA student projects.

Kim joined the School of Journalism in 1997 after more than 20 years at CBC, mostly in radio where she was news reporter, editor, producer and reader. Kim still produces radio documentaries.

Kim holds a BA (Hons) from King’s/Dalhousie Universities and a MA from Saint Mary’s University.

Susan Newhook teaches classes in video and television journalism at the King’s College School of Journalism. She received her Bachelor of Applied Arts in Journalism at Ryerson, and her MA in history from Dalhousie.

Her experience in journalism includes almost 20 years as a researcher, reporter and producer for CBC news and current affairs, and freelance work for clients including the CBC, The Globe and Mail, Swiss national television, and the Discovery Channel.

Her current research focuses on applications of film and video in community development.

Valerie is the Affiliate Relations Manager at Access Copyright, the Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency. She works with both publishers and creators to explain the benefits of affiliation and promote new digital service offerings such as i-copyright. Prior to working at Access, Valerie was the co-owner and partner in the BookMovers Sales Agency working with a number of trade non-fiction publishers. She has over 30 years experience in the publishing industry and has held senior sales management positions in both the educational and trade sectors of the market.
